Voices in the Dark, Inc. began as an all African American Women’s Theater Company dedicated to presenting, showcasing and performing works writen by and/or about the African American woman.  It was the brainchild of its Artistic Director, Ms. Tommye Myrick, after reading poems and short stories written by her good friend and poet, Ms. Sharon Bridgeforth.  Inspired by the moving messages that paid homage and tribute o the plight of African-American woman, Ms.  Myrick established the first ever all African American Women’s Theatre Company n this country in 1992 (feature in Essence Magazine.)  Soon, the company which started with 13 females members grew to a membership of 52 that included both men and women.  Operating out of New Orleans, Lousiana, Voices in the Dark and its Artistic Director became recognized as one of the city’s most prominent Theater Companies and has produced over 50 productions while receiving numerous awards and recognition including several Big Easy Awards and nominations.  Voices in the Dark continues to produce and present artistic experiences that challenge the spirit and fortify the soul.
